When someone nearby searches for what you do, your Google Business Profile is often the first thing they see. It shows your hours, photos, reviews and a button to call or get directions. Many owners set it up once and never touch it again. This checklist covers the parts that matter most, in the order we would tackle them. You can do most of it in one afternoon.
1. Make sure you own and can edit the profile
Search your business name on Google Maps. If a profile shows up and you cannot edit it, use the "Own this business?" or "Claim this business" link and follow the verification steps. If there is no profile yet, create one at business.google.com. Use an email address the business controls, so you never get locked out.
2. Write your name, address and phone exactly the same everywhere
Your business name on Google should match your sign, website and social profiles. Do not add extra keywords to the name, since that goes against Google's guidelines and can get a profile suspended. Write your phone and address the same way on your website, Facebook, Yelp and directories. If you serve customers at their location and do not want your home address public, set yourself up as a service area business and list the cities or zip codes you cover instead.
3. Pick the right primary category
The primary category tells Google what you are. Choose the most specific one that fits: "Real estate agent" instead of "Consultant," or "Vacation home rental agency" instead of "Business." Then add a few secondary categories only for services you truly offer.
4. Write a clear business description
You get up to 750 characters. Use the first sentence or two to say what you do, who you help and where. Then mention your main services in plain words, the way a customer would search for them. For example: "Bilingual real estate agent helping first-time buyers and sellers in Orlando and Kissimmee. Hablamos español." Skip links, all caps and phrases like "best in town."
5. Fill in hours, including holidays
Set your regular hours, then add special hours for holidays before they arrive. If you work by appointment only, say so and add a booking link.
6. Add real photos, and keep adding them
Upload a logo, a cover photo, and pictures of your storefront, team, work and space. Use real photos instead of stock images, because people want to see what they will actually get: listings and open houses for a realtor, the property and neighborhood for an Airbnb host, real jobs for a service business.
7. List your services and products
The Services section lets you name each thing you offer, with a short description and an optional price. Write each service the way customers say it. "Kitchen remodel" is clearer than "Interior transformation solutions." Packages and products can go in the Products section.
8. Ask for reviews and answer every one
From your profile dashboard you can copy a short link that takes customers straight to the review form. Send it by text or email right after a finished job. Then reply to every review. Thank happy customers by name. For a negative one, stay calm, acknowledge the concern and invite them to contact you directly. Never offer discounts or gifts in exchange for reviews, since Google does not allow it.
9. Post updates regularly
Google lets you publish short updates, offers and events right on your profile. A post can announce a new service, a seasonal special, an open house or a helpful tip. One post a week keeps your profile looking active.
10. Connect it to a website that finishes the job
Your profile gets attention, but many people will still tap "Website" before they call or book. Make sure that link goes to a page that loads fast on a phone, repeats the same name, phone and address, and has a clear next step like a call button or booking form.
A quick monthly routine
- Check that your hours and phone number are still correct.
- Add three to five new photos.
- Reply to any new reviews.
- Publish at least two updates.
- Look at the Performance section to see how people are finding and contacting you.
Want us to handle it for you?
If you would rather spend your time serving customers, our Google Business Profile Optimization ($199) handles most of this checklist for you: we correct your categories, hours and contact info, write your description, add your services, organize up to 15 of your photos, write 4 posts and set up a review request message and link. Google controls rankings, so we cannot promise placement, but your profile will be complete and accurate. If you also need a site for that "Website" button to point to, Website-in-a-Weekend ($999) builds a professional 5-page site, and it has an option that includes the Google Business Profile setup.
